In addition to our regularly scheduled practice
times, we periodically
hold special events. These include weekend retreats, one-day
retreats, extended evening practices, celebrations, chanting
("Kido") retreats, and so on.
All events are held at the Great Lake Zen Center unless otherwise stated.
Also note
that all events are free unless noted otherwise.

January, 2008
- Heart Kyol Che Opening Ceremony, Monday, January 7, 7:30 PM
Kyol Che, literally translated, means "tight dharma," and it is an
extended period of intense practice. At GLZC we celebrate Heart Kyol
Che during the same period of time that the Kyol Che 90-day retreat occurs
at the Kwan Um School of Zen's main temple.
Participants in Heart Kyol Che make commitments to increase their practice
during this period. Heart Kyol Che continues until April.
There will be an intensive week of practice half-way through the
period. (See the February Events.)
- Extended Practice, Friday, January 18, 7 PM - 10 PM
Join us for an extended evening practice. You can come for part or all
the practice.
- Dharma Talk, January 23, 7:30 PM
Join us for a free dharma talk by one of our center's teachers.

February, 2008
- Introduction to Zen, Monday, February 4, 7:30 - 9:00 PM
A free Introduction to Zen with the opportunity to ask questions of a
teacher. Sitting meditation follows the Intro. All are welcome.
- Intensive Practice Week, Monday - Sunday, February 18 - 24
Monday - Thursday Practice from 7 PM - 9 PM
Friday Public Talk with Zen Master Dae Kwang at 7:30 PM
Saturday - Sunday YMJJ Retreat
During the week of February 18, we will hold nightly practices. Monday
through Thursday we will practice from 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM. A free public talk
with our Guiding Teacher, Zen Master Dae Kwang, will be held on Friday, February
22nd at 7:30 PM.
There is no need to sign up for practice on Monday through Thursday, nor is
it necessary to sign up for the public talk. It is
necessary to sign up for the YMJJ weekend retreat.
YMJJ Retreat, Saturday, Feb. 23 - Sunday, Feb. 24
Zen Master Dae Kwang will lead a weekend YMJJ
retreat. The retreat will be held at GLZC. In addition to
leading the retreat, Zen Master Dae Kwang will be conducting
interviews. Vegetarian meals are provided. Sleeping space is
available at no extra charge at GLZC or members homes. Those planning
on staying at GLZC should bring a sleeping bag, pillow and
washcloth/towel. You may register for this YMJJ by signing up at GLZC or

There will be no practice at 8:00 AM due to the one day sutra talk and extended sitting.
- One Day Extended Practice, Saturday, April 5, 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Senior Dharma Teacher Susi Childress will give a sutra talk from 9 - 11 AM, followed by an extended sitting from 11 AM - 3 PM.
You should bring a bag lunch.
- End of Heart Kyol Che and Buddha's Birthday Celebration
Monday, April 7, 7:30 PM
Join us as we celebrate the birth of the historical Buddha and the end of
our three month Heart Kyol Che. Friends, family and newcomers
are welcome.

- Midwest Sangha Gathering

teacher. Sitting meditation follows the Intro. All are welcome.
- Kido One-Day Retreat, Saturday, November 15, 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM
To be held at:
First Unitarian Society
1342 N. Astor St. (Corner of Astor and Ogden)
Kido means "energy path." Participants in the Kido play
percussion instruments while continuously chanting "Kwan Seum Bosal."
Bring a percussion instrument (this can be as simple as blocks of
wood). Some additional ones will be provided. You should also
bring a bag lunch. Newcomers are
